What is Dragon's Dogma?

Dragon's Dogma is an open word RPG developed and published by Capcom. The game was developed by Capcom members who previously worked on other entries such as Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Breath of Fire. Director Hideaki Itsuno said that Dragon's Dogma is a game he had been dreaming about making since his school days. He was able to realize it now due to advancing technology in video game development.

The game features a versatile combat mechanic that allows you to do more than simply hack and slash at enemies, but also interact with the environment to shove enemies into explosive barrels or off of cliffs, and scale large monsters to target hard-to-reach weakspots and fell bosses with ease. You'll also feel a sense of progression when choosing your Vocations, i.e. Classes, with the beginning Vocations being strong bases that evolve into, or fuse their traits together to create stronger Vocations.

When was Dragon's Dogma Announced?

Dragon's Dogma was initially planned to be announced alongside DMC: Devil May Cry during the Tokyo Game Show held on 2010, but the announcement was later delayed to Capcom's Captivate 2011 event.

Anime Adaptation of Dragon's Dogma

Due to its popularity, the game had an anime adaptation debuted on Netflix last September 17, 2020. This rendition received mixed feedback from the general audience giving the material a score of 39% while critiques gave it an 83% score at least on Rotten Tomatoes. An efforted rendition that retells the original game in a series of episodes. Though the main plot of the anime differs from that of the game, one can expect a similar general plotline similar to that of the game along with familiar game combat, spells, and elements that make Dragon's Dogma unique. Fans will catch all of these in an instant. This is a good way to shine a light on Dragon's Dogma's lore, its world, and its characters if gaming is out of your league. As of now, the main chunk of the lore or events that happened in the game was presented in Season 1. It is unclear if a possible continuation is needed, only time can tell if it will return.

Dragon's Dogma: Everything we know about Dragon's Dogma

Dragon's Dogma Story & Setting

"Take up arms, newly Arisen"

In Dragon's Dogma, players take control of a villager from the village of Cassardis. When a dragon unexpectedly wreaks havoc on the small fishing village, the character is one of the only people to take a stand against the creature. Acknowledging this, the Dragon proceeds to take the character's heart, marking them as the Arisen. Without any knowledge as to how they survived the fatal attack or why people labeled as Pawns start to appear before them, the Arisen set out on a journey to find the answers to these questions and to answer the Dragon's call to face them and take their hearts back.

As you make your way through Gransys, you will meet a colorful array of new friends, face deadly adversaries to prove your worth and gain access to Pawns, uncover hidden nefarious plots that may threaten to end not only the duchy of Gran Soren, but also the world, and discover secrets about the world's past Arisen as shown during the tutorial cutscenes, as well as the Dragon and how they came to be. The fate of the world rests on your shoulders, Arisen.

Gameplay Features in Dragon's Dogma

Dragon's Dogma Unique Combat

Interact with your enemies more than just by smacking them in the face. In Dragon's Dogma, you and your pawns have the option to grab and throw enemies, people, and certain items. Try your luck lobbing an explosive barrel at an enemy or combo a magick fire attack with an oil bottle your pawn just threw. Defeat enemies in style by grabbing and throwing them into environmental hazards or attack an enemy while your pawn has it grappled. Larger monsters, particularly bosses, can be scaled, allowing you to climb on and attack a monster without it being able to reach you, and in some cases, hitting its weak spot. When doing any of these actions, do remember to keep your stamina in check as allowing it to deplete completely might result in a fatal fall.

Besides Dragon's Dogma's unique grabbing and scaling mechanics, the game also features some dynamic magic casting mechanics. In Dragon's Dogma, the Arisen's energy is used up based on the power of the spell used. Energy here doesn't refer to a magical energy source such as mana in many other RPGs, but the Arisen's physical energy. Conjure up a powerful enough spell and the Arisen is left breathless and panting, requiring a few seconds to recover before they can cast another spell.

Dragom's Dogma also features a full day-night-cycle. The night is perilous, not only in the fact that navigation is significantly harder

Dragon's Dogma's Open World Fantasy Setting

Delve into the land of Dragon's Dogma and enjoy the sights of Gransys. On your travels, you will come across the quiet village of Cassardis, the dark halls of the Everfall, and many other ambient environments. Enemies such as goblins and harpies will stand in your way, and you will face off with powerful bosses like a chimera, a hydra, and eventually, the Dragon.

As you progress through the story, discover new places, and meet new people, you will open up more quests, encounter a wider variety of enemies, and gain access to new items. Explore the open world at your own pace - look for hidden chests, buy rare items at peddlers, farm materials to upgrade your equipment, get those side quests done before tackling the main quest. With 50 hours of main quest content and an additional 70 hours of side content, there is never a dull moment.

Character Customization in Dragon's Dogma

Each player will go through the same story, the same tribulations, however, that doesn't mean you all have to look the same. Dragon's Dogma features a comprehensive character customization system. Upon starting the game, players will be able to customize their Arisen's gender, hairstyle, facial features, body type, height, weight, and more, with some choices affecting gameplay including their Arisen's stamina regeneration and how much weight they can carry before getting encumbered. Besides their Arisen, players have the option to customize their main Pawn with the same amount of detail. These character features can later be changed through 'Metamorphosis. Armor choices also affect how characters look, allowing flexibility in character fashion so that players can save the world in style!

NPC Pawn System in Dragon's Dogma

Pawns in Dragoon's Dogma are NPC characters that the Arisen can recruit to their party to give them an edge in combat. Besides themselves and their Main Pawn, the Arisen can recruit two additional Pawns through Rift Stones found in key Locations across Gransys. You'll find Pawns are indispensable during Combat, not only having Vocations that can complement your own and fill up any weaknesses your party may have, but also to give you valuable tips and information on how to defeat enemies and bosses. As you play more of the game, you'll find that Pawns play a bigger part in the story than you may have initially thought.

Online play in Dragon's Dogma comes in the form of hiring pawns created by other players. By exchanging player IDs, you and your friends can enjoy the story with each other's created characters, even when you're not playing at the same time. Alternatively, you can search for other player's pawns by level or vocation depending on your party needs. A list of the most popular pawns is conveniently provided, and if there were any that particularly struck your fancy, you can go through your history tab and rehire them at a later time. If you're playing offline, no worries. There is a pool of pawns provided by the game to help you on your journey.

Dragon's Dogma Vocations

Select your fighting style in Dragon's Dogma by choosing between different vocations. Prefer a tanky hack and slash experience? Roll with Fighter. More of a dextrous glass canon? Strider sounds right up your alley. Or perhaps you enjoy the magick support playstyle? Sounds like you're a Mage. Later in the game, you will be able to access more advanced versions of these core Vocations and even hybrid variations.

The Vocations you can take up in Dragon's Dogma are:

  • Fighter - A tanky melee user that utilizes counterattacks to overpower their enemies. Wields swords and shields.
  • Strider - A dexterous heavy-hitter that can make the most use of the game's unique scaling mechanics. Wields daggers and bows.
  • Mage - A defensive magick user specializing in healing and buffing allies. Wields staves.
  • Warrior - A bursty DPS unit that runs straight into the heart of the battle. Wields longswords and war hammers.
  • Ranger - A long-ranged sniper able to effectively disrupt and pick off enemies. Wields daggers and longbows.
  • Sorcerer - The classic glass-canon offensive magick user able to decimate enemies in a wide area. Wields archistaves.
  • Mystic Knight - A melee-oriented magick user capable of dealing damage and supporting their allies. Wields swords, maces, staves, and magick shields.
  • Assassin - A unit versatile at any range, able to bolster their already powerful attacks into extremely lethal ones. Wields swords. daggers, shields, and bows.
  • Magick Archer - A tactical ranged unit able to imbue its projectiles with magical effects. Wields magick bows, daggers, and staves.

If you wish to try out a new way of fighting, you can change vocations at the city of Gran Soren for a price, but once you have purchased a vocation, you can freely swap between those you own. Each of your pawns will have their own vocation too, so there is lots of variety when building your party.

If you're still undecided on what vocation to pick, you can choose based on what weapons you want to fight with. The weapons that are available to you are based on your current vocation. Depending on your vocation and what equipment you have on, your role in the party changes. Learn more about choosing the right vocation for you here.
