Encumbrance is a game mechanic in Dragon's Dogma that affects a character's mobility based on how much said character is carrying both in its inventory and as equipped items. All characters have varied maximum capacities based on their character weight. You may check pawn and character encumbrance status in the inventory menu. Encumbrance levels vary from "Very Light" to "Overencumbered", progressively reducing walk, run and spring speed, and eventually preventing the character from picking up any more items or be able to combine items in their inventory.

Effects of Encumbrance on Stamina

Encumbrance has a direct effect on stamina consumption and regeneration. In general, lighter carry means less consumption and faster regeneration
  • Very Light running time is double that of "Overencumbered" running time
  • Stamina Recovery of "Overencumbered" status is 130% more than "Very Light"
  • Once Over-encumbered, values for consumption will not become any higher
